Linear motors, the muscles of Sodick's product.
Sodick's linear motors realize high-speed and high-precision motion, saving energy.
Rotary move vs Linear move
Linear-motor drive is superior to a drive system with a rotating motor and ball screw in motion speed and positioning accuracy. In addition, a linear motor has high response and maintains stable operation over a long period thanks to much reduced mechanical contact. Sodick has accumulated a rich portfolio of knowledge and expertise in linear motors including the know-how for the design and production of linear motors best suited for various types of machines.

How fast Linear motor moves
Whereas the general requirement for a linear motor used to be "how fast it could move an object over a distance of meters", Sodick began the research and development of a linear motor sticking to "how fast it could move an object over a distance of 1 μm". As a result, Sodick's linear motors have achieved quantum improvement in machining speed and energy saving over those of conventional ones. The company also has focused efforts on keeping the temperature of a linear motor at a low level to maintain high thrust, and with respect to this aspect, Sodick's linear motors are far ahead of similar products.
As more precise positioning has come to be required over smaller distances, Sodick has been focusing its linear motor development activities on how fast it can move an object over a distance of 0.1 μm.
